Calgary’s Elbow Valley Villains off to Canadian Soccer Championships in Moncton
The Elbow Valley Villains capped their successful season at the Alberta Provincial U14 Premier Boys soccer playoffs in Calgary, with a 4 – 2 victory over
the Northwest United Callies in the final Gold medal match. As the Alberta champions, the Villains will travel to Moncton, N.B. in October to represent
Alberta in the Canadian National Championships.
The Villains path to the Provincial Championship was not easy, with the increasingly high level of competitive
soccer in Alberta making every match a challenge. However, under the tutelage of their coach and technical director, Munib Koric, the Villains enjoyed steady success,
placing first in the Calgary U14 Premier seeding rounds, and then winning the city championship in the ensuing playoff rounds. Their success continued in the Alberta
provincial championship with tough wins over Lakeland United (2 – 1) and the Edmonton Strikers (3 – 2) putting them in the Gold medal match against the other Calgary entry,
the NWU Callies. The all-Calgary final was tied 2 – 2 at the half, but 2 unanswered goals in the second half sealed the victory and the Gold medal for the
Elbow Valley Villains. The Silver medal went to the Calgary NWU Callies, and in the consolation match, the Edmonton Internazionale won the Bronze with a 3 – 0
decision over their cross-town rivals, the Edmonton Strikers.
The Provincial title and the opportunity to represent Alberta at the National Championships in
Moncton was recognized early in the season as a possibility by the Villains coach, Munib Koric, as he cautioned players and parents early in the season to leave
their calendars open and be prepared for the possible trip to Moncton. After the Provincial Gold medal victory, an added target was voiced regarding that the high
scoring Villains team still had a shot at scoring 100 goals over the season, a unique commerative for the Alberta Centenary.
